Ecruos output EPUB is widely accepted as the ‘defacto’ digital format standard for eBooks, with its signature reflowable text that can be read on a variety of reading systems Viz including the iPad, nook / nookColor, Kobo,Kindle and Sony readers etc.
Ecruos provides ePub Version 3.0 and its key features are listed as below:
- HTML 5: EPUB3 reading systems are able to process XHTML files written in HTML5. This doesn’t mean that web browsers will be able to display EPUB files, unless they are able to process the additional navigation information contained within the EPUB file. HTML 5 element supersedes the NCX document.
- CSS3 Support: In EPUB3, the new baseline for style sheet is CSS2.1 with some CSS3 features added. This will provide much richer layout including multi-column layout, better font support, and better control over line break, hyphenation and directional printing.
- Multiple Style Sheets: Supports the ability to include multiple style sheets
- OTF & WOFF: Facilitates the retention of the look and feel of the PDF in the EPUB version
- SVG Support: Pages will be lighter, thus reducing load time while using the SVG element to draw shapes
- Metadata: A rich array of options for adding publication metadata to improve global distribution of publications. eg: a Japanese publication could include an alternate Roman-script representation
- Audio: Audio can be inserted into eBook files using the HTML5 tag. This is what Apple, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon did all along to embed audio in enhanced eBooks. Now, it’s simply part of the EPUB3 spec. Unlike most systems, ePub Version 3.0 does NOT require Reading systems to support audio.
- Multimedia: Video can be inserted into eBook files using the HTML5 tag
- Media Overlays: Enables the usage of text-to-speech facility (PLS, SSML phonemes, CSS speech features) and SMIL
- MathML: MathML is part of HTML5, and therefore, it is part of EPUB3. The Reading systems are able to process the presentation form of MathML and also support the content form of MathML
- Scripting: Scripting and interactivity is a new feature of EPUB3.
